What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment used to treat spider veins and varicose veins. A chemical solution is injected directly into the affected veins which causes the lining of the vein to become irritated, collapse and stick together. Over time, the vein will shrink and eventually disappear. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that takes about 15-30 minutes per treatment depending on the severity of the area being treated.

Am I a good candidate?
Sclerotherapy treatment can be recommended for the vast majority of people suffering from spider veins. However, there are cases when the procedure should be avoided. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid getting sclerotherapy.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Patients may experience a little discomfort such as stinging or cramping as the solution is injected. For the most part, sclerotherapy is not considered a painful procedure.
How many treatments will I need?
Everyone is different and it depends on the severity of the condition. For most people 1-3 treatments are all that are needed.
How long does it take for the veins to disappear?
Initially, the treated veins may appear darker or more noticeable before they begin to fade. Your provider will talk to you more about your expectations during your treatment. In general, it can take 4-6 weeks after the procedure to see improvements of some larger vessels, but it can take several months for the full effects depending on the severity of the condition.
Is sclerotherapy safe?
Sclerotherapy is generally considered a safe and effective treatment for spider veins and varicose veins. This procedure has been used for many years and has a proven track record of success.
